VOICE LESSONS
A typical lesson begins with stretching and breathing exercises that gently warm the body and prepare it to sing.  We may do straw work or other SOTV (semi occluded vocal tract exercises..a long name for some really simple yet effective exercises).  I’ll prescribe vocal exercises to build, strengthen, and expand your range. We’ll choose rep that showcases your unique talents and I’ll always keep in mind your individual goals.  Through our work together, my students technical capabilities flourish including (but not limited to): Warming up the body and the voice, working on rep for any occasion. “We tailor the lesson to your unique vocal abilities and goals. Through our work together, my students technical capabilities flourish including (but of course not limited to):
  • Breathing for singing
  • Opening the throat
  • Resonance
  • Agility
  • Style
  • Interpretation
  • Repetoire
  • Performance skills

Artist Development Classes
The academy offers three ADC’s per academic year.  These are masterclass style experiences where students get the opportunity to perform a full song, a 16 bar cut, or any material they are working on for their peers in a supportive classroom setting. Here’s your chance to work on performance skills including (but not limited to):
  • Presentation
  • Song as a drama analysis
  • Performance anxiety
  • Mic techniques
Guest artists and teachers are often invited to conduct class, and a professional collaborative pianist accompanies all singers.
Performance
I offer my students three informal recital opportunities throughout the academic year. Choose to sing on one or all three, the choice is yours.  A professional collaborative pianist will rehearse before and accompany you during these performances. It’s a great time to hone your performance skills, try out new rep, and show mom and dad how much you’ve grown artisitcally, all in a supportive non-competitive environment.

Vocal styles
Whether your favorite music is an opera aria, a Broadway 11 o’clock number, or the latest pop ballad, I can help you not only perfect your sound but bring the song to life. I strive to continue my own education by taking voice lessons and attending workshops, Including the Somatic Voicework at the Shenandoah Conservatory which prepared me to teach non classical vocal techniques and styles. No matter the repertoire, I have the tools to help you understand it an master it. Let's dive into any of the following styles in our lessons together:
  • Classical
  • Musical theater (golden age and contemporary)
  • Pop/rock
  • Folk
  • So many others!

Audition Prep
Auditioning for a show and don’t know how to prepare?  I can help! By assessing the show or other performance opportunity, and your unique strengths, I can help you choose the perfect piece for the audition and I can make cuts so that you will not only know the full piece, but also a 16 bar and 32 bar cut.  No matter what the situation, I can help you prepare so that you’ll feel confident!

Sight-singing and ear training
Sight-singing is an invaluable skill for every singer of any style and any level.  If you’re auditioning for NCMEA Honor’s Chorus, NC Governor’s School, college music entrance exams, or an elite community choirs, sight singing is a necessary skill that will be assessed during your audition. Together during a lesson, we use methodical and intentional exercises to train the eye and the ear in tandum. The more adept you are at sight singing, the faster you’ll learn music, leaving more time to focus on interpretation and, well….enjoyment!
